I served 4 years active duty, then 6 years in the USNR, then 15 years in the USCGR.
Married, kids all grown, 2 grandkids, retired
Ordained Elder in Presbyterian USA church in 2006.
Military Experiences
Started in Sep 1964
Machinist's Mate (MM)
Was a MMFN, MM3, MM2 in Main Control engine room
where we had main propulsion systems, electrical generators, and water distillers. I did almost everything there.
Joined the USN Reserve after 4 yrs active, for 6 years.
Joined the USCG Reserve in1977 until 1992.

Vietnam War
We patrolled the Gulf of Tonkin with 1 helicopter, rescued several pilots shot down, did a lot of plane guarding behind carriers and shot down 1 plane that I remember.
I was a Top Watch in Main Engine Control. Did 6 on, 6 off.
Went to Subic Bay, Hong Kong, Japan for R&R.

Machinist Mate in engine room that had 1200 psi steam driven turbines to propel the ship, to generate electricity, and we made fresh water from sea water.

Mediterranean
I was assigned to Navy Shore Patrol when we were in Cannes, France. I was a liason for the Navy in case any sailors were arrested and brought to their police station.
But, I didn't know French and they only knew a word or 2 of English. But, that was interesting anyway.

Went to several European countries, Gibralter, Turkey and Tunisia.
Trained new crew members in engine room.
