Michael Bryant is serving in his twenty-forth year as the Field Representative for United States Congressman Sanford D. Bishop, Jr. He now works in 5 of the 29 South Georgia counties represented by Congressman Bishop. They are Baker, Calhoun, Early, Grady, and Mitchell Counties.
In these 24 years, Mr. Bryant has acted as a representative, assistant district director, and a liaison for the Congressman which including attending functions with and in the absence of Representative Bishop and obtains and maintains a knowledge of issues that affects the district and reports them to the Congressman. Mr. Bryant forwards constituent requests to the Congressman or to the appropriate agencies and establishes and maintains contacts with constituency in and outside of the Second Congressional District. Mr. Bryant has also coordinated or assisted in coordinating for Congressman Bishop the Social Security Forum (1999), the Faith Based Initiative (2003), the Economic Stimulus Forum (2009), the Affordable Healthcare Forum (2011), the Small Business Administration Forum (2012), the Concord Coalition (2012, 2013), the Military Family Caucus (2012, 2013, 2014, 2015), the Army Corp of Engineers Town Hall Meetings (2015/2017) and the Grants Town Hall Meeting (2015).
Mr. Bryant was appointed to work for United States Representative Bishop in September of 1997 after working with a number of youth programs to include the Pelham Youth Development Center, the Archbold-Northside, the Gator Human Services, the Thomas County Juvenile Court, the Albany Group Home, the First Step Training (JTPA), the Thomasville YMCA, and the Thomasville and Thomas County Boards of Education.
As a field representative for Congressman Bishop, Mr. Bryant served as an ex-officio member of the Thomasville-Thomas County and Valdosta-Lowndes County Chambers of Commerce. He also served as a member of the Valdosta Weed and Seed Steering Committee, the 2002-2003 Jimmy Carter Work Project Committee of the Valdosta-Lowndes Chapter of Habitat for Humanity, and the 2002-2003 and 2008-2009 Southwest Georgia and Regional Technical College’s Selection Committee for Georgia’s Georgia Occupational Award of Leadership Programs respectively.
As a member of the Valdosta-Lowndes County Chamber of Commerce, Mr. Bryant served as a member of the Governmental Affairs Committee which addresses issues affecting the local, state, and national governments.
On the Valdosta Weed and Seed Steering Committee, Mr. Bryant assisted in creating policy that would guide the Weed and Seed program to rid designated areas within the city of drugs, unkept properties, and other negative activities while bringing in to the area positive development of properties and wholesome activities.
On the 2002-2003 Jimmy Carter Work Project Committee, Mr. Bryant helped in the planning and building of 40-50 new homes in one week for those individuals who are economically deprived.
On the 2002-2003 Southwest Georgia Technical College’s Selection Committee for Georgia’s Georgia Occupational Award of Leadership (GOAL) Program, Mr. Bryant helped in the initial stage of selecting an individual who would represent the Thomas County area in the final selection of the GOAL representative for the State of Georgia.
Mr. Bryant is also a leader in the community serving as president and co-captain of his residential area’s Neighborhood Watch and Home Association Programs; Advisory Committee member for the Grady County Alternative School; member of the Thomas, Mitchell, Miller, Seminole, Decatur, and Grady Counties Children and Youth Collaboratives; mentor at Cairo’s Washington Middle and High Schools; Marketing and Communications with Patrick Lundy and the Ministers of Music.
As president of the Shallowbrook Farms Property Homeowners Association, Inc. and co-captain of the Stevens Street Neighborhood Watch Program, Mr. Bryant has been instrumental in an ongoing effort to strengthen the living area by leading regular gatherings with the objective of bringing the area’s residents together and promoting pride of the residential areas; conducting a quarterly trash pick-up encouraging owners to positively maintain their property; and serves as a committee member for the annual DewFair clean-up and fun day community event.
Mr. Bryant has held other leadership positions including past board member and past interim director of the Thomasville-Thomas County Kids Voting Affiliate of Georgia. Mr. Bryant is partly responsible for establishing and executing the affiliate’s policy in the successful participation in the voting process by Thomas County youth in grades K through 12. He also served as past Presidents of his 1986 Thomasville High School Class and 30th Class Reunion Co-Chairman and the 100 Black Men of Brooks-Grady-Thomas Counties, Inc. Mr. Bryant served on the campaigns to re-elect Sanford D. Bishop, Jr. to the United States House of Representatives; Second Vice-President of the Thomas County Chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People; Director of Thomasville’s First Missionary Baptist Church’s Young Active Christians; member of the City of Thomasville’s Business Advisory Committee; member of the Thomasville Leadership Council; Treasurer of the Thomasville High School Class of 1986 15th Year Anniversary Planning Committee; member of the Georgia, Thomas County Adult and Youth Mass Choirs; member of Advancing Valdosta Board of Directors; Southeast Regional Chair of the Employer Support for the Guard and Reserve (ESGR); Member and Planning Committee Chair of the Thomas County Chapter of the Florida A&M University Alumni Association; 2015 Campaign Manager for the Thomasville Board of Education Member Dr. Mary Williams Scruggs-District 1; manager for the 2018 campaign to elect Kimberly Edwards Brown to the Thomas County Board of Education; and member of the Redemption Ministries, Inc. Board of Directors. Mr. Bryant humbly served as a judge for the Miss Valdosta, Miss Thomasville, and Miss Boston Pageant Selection Committees, and a panelist to select representatives to participate in the 2007 and 2014 Mitchell County Electric Membership Corp’s Washington Youth Leadership Tour. Additionally, Mr. Bryant served as a volunteer with the Employer Support for the Guard and Reserves, member of the National Guard Association’s Company Grade Officer Committee, Chairman of the Regional Partnership Network, Program Chairman of the Florida A and M University Thomas County Alumni Association, and Chairman of the Bryant-Knight Family Reunion 2013.
Mr. Bryant, a resident of Thomasville, Georgia, was born April 26, 1968 in that same city to Mr. Alvin Simmons of Lake City, Florida and Mrs. Barbara Jean Bryant Scott of Thomasville, Georgia. He graduated from Thomasville High School in 1986. He also graduated from the Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU) in 1994 in the area of Political Science and received a Masters of Public Administration on May 7, 2002 from Valdosta State University. He served in the United States Marine Corps from March of 1987 until March of 2001 in which he became a veteran while deployed in the Desert Storm/Desert Shield Campaign. He is currently a Lieutenant Colonel in the Army Reserves, past Army National Guard commander of the 1230th Transportation Company in Bainbridge, Georgia; executed duties as the Simulations Officer with the 120th Infantry Brigade, 2-395th Brigade Support Battalion and served as an officer in the Support Operations section of the 110th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion in Tifton, Georgia while deployed to Iraq during Iraqi Freedom. After 34 years of military service, Mr. Bryant is currently a Major while serving as an Observer Controller Trainer with the 84th Training Division at Fort Benning, Georgia. Mr. Bryant is married to Chandra Nichols Bryant of Albany, Georgia who is a teacher at the Thomas County Middle School and instructor of Cosmetology at the Southern Regional Technical College. Mr. and Mrs. Bryant are the proud parents of one daughter, Zayla Bryant and they are members of the Family Worship Center in Cairo, Georgia.
