Platoon Sergeant
Radio Team Chief and Hq Platoon Sergeant in the first units to receive the new Abrams tanks. Never served with a dumber group of soldiers than tankers and their mechanics. Drugs were so prevalent that doors were removed from barracks rooms and wall lockers were stacked in the hallways. Between exploding gun barrels to burning sleeping tents and idiots who continuously slammed the hatch over their helmet intercom cords, this assignment led me to take an early discharge.
Mar 1974 - Mar 1978
Radio Team Chief
Picked to take over the battalion legal clerk position because I had previous personnel experience at Fort Gordon, GA. Eventually became a team chief at the Berlin Brigade headquarters. Worked alongside the EOC monitoring radio traffic from our patrol cars in East Berlin as they reported on Soviet troop movements. The Soviets did the same on our side of the wall. Also monitored radio traffic on the duty train between Berlin and Helmstedt.
Apr 1971 - Mar 1974
05B Instructor
Instructor at the Signal School, teaching Morse Code and FM Radio procedures.
Sep 1971 - Oct 1972
High Speed Morse Intercept Operator
Intercepted Morse transmissions from all of Africa to Russia. Kagnew Station was the world's largest spy station, with units from the Army, Navy, and Air Force. Wonderful experience. The base was like small town America - everything we wanted, open 24 hours as we worked rotating shifts. I had to leave early because I married a local and had to give up my security access. The Army sent me to Fort Bragg as punishment. I was only at Bragg long enough to reenlist to get out of there.
