Responsible for 30+ men in 1st division responsible for all topside areas and activity. Paint interior and exterior. Operate & mantain small boats and anchor. Helm, lee helm lookout port, stand.& aft. Security detail. Coxswain. Qualified Surface warfare specialist. Knowledgeable of all engineering and weapons systems. Navigation and damage control locker leader. Qualified in port officer of the Deck. Only E-6 trusted with this privledge. Our Captain felt his ship was safe under my watch in foreign ports especially during hostilities. He constantly tested my vigilance.

Monte Carlo Monaco, NATO exercise DISPLAY DETRMINATION, Transit Turkish Straits. Operate in the Black Sea. Observed Russian submarines, not impressed. I missed Istanbul Turkey. La Maddalena Sardinia , Barcelona, Malaga, Rota & Palma Spain , Toulon & Villafranche France. Exercise AFRICAN EAGLE. Rescued VF & F-14 radar intercept OFFICER & SAR

Enjoyed 50 foot waves. Amazing how powerful the ocean is moving skyscraper sized waves. The destroyers and frigates would disappear beneath the waves submarining. I would get a first hand observation aboard my next vessel. Watertight integrity was and is paramount in defense of a ship.
