Apr 1965 - Oct 1967
Squad Leader
My MOS, 62E20, was a Heavy equipment operator specializing in the operation of a Clarke 175 AM Front Loader in a Combat Engineer Battalion. In early '66, all Front Loader Operators were assigned to line platoons instead of staying in Hqtrs platoons. From that time, I also played Combat Engineer, the dread of all equipment operators, learning to build bridges, floating, wood and Bailey's. Also learned to use explosives and other things Combat Engineers do. We also had to clear the way for the infantry if it came down to that. I remember a target we had near the Czechoslovakian border. It was one particular tree that had to be chopped down or cut with Det Cord to delay the enemy for a few minutes. I wonder today if that same particular tree is still there.
