Bio 

Command Sergeant Major Mark W. Bowman was the Command Sergeant Major for the Illinois Army National Guard. He led the Noncommissioned Officer Corps and was responsible for all areas impacting on the Enlisted Soldiers including training, discipline, morale and well-being. Nearly 3,000 33rd IBCT Soldiers from across Illinois were mobilized in late 2008 in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan. Soldiers of 33rd IBCT provided the backbone of Combined Joint Task Force Phoenix VIII. During this historic deployment, CSM Bowman served as both CJTF Phoenix VIII Command Sergeant Major and the 33rd IBCT Command Sergeant Major. Prior to his assignment with the 33rd IBCT, CSM Bowman was the Command Sergeant Major of 1st Battalion, 178th Infantry and Command Sergeant Major of 2nd Battalion, 202nd Air Defense Artillery. Bowman enlisted in the Army in October 1979 as a tank driver. He attended basic training and AIT at Fort Knox, Kentucky. He has held various positions throughout his career, including: Tank Commander, K Troop, 3rd Squadron, 11th Armored Calvary Regiment Germany, Senior Drill Sergeant, Co. C, 3-337th AR, First Sergeant, Battery C, 2-202nd ADA, Command Sgt. Maj. 2-202nd ADA, Command Sgt. Maj. Task Force Eagle, Bagram, Afghanistan, 33rd Area Support Group, Command Sgt. Maj., 1-178th IN, Command Sgt. Maj., 33rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, Command Sergeant Major of CJTF Phoenix VIII Kabul, Afghanistan. He was proud to serve as the State Command Sergeant Major for the Illinois Army National Guard.
