Aircrew Egress Systems Craftsman
Both my Iraq tours and most of my career, I was an Egress Specialist. I’m the only woman to serve in that job in my unit’s history (the 100 pound weight lift requirement disqualifies men & women alike). I broke my back in the line of duty before I ever went overseas, sucked it up for years, but when they got my double diagnosis of degenerative disk disease and spinal stenosis, I was eventually medically retired. My military retirement was in 2012 and my full time technician retirement followed the next January. My wingman husband (who was avionics flightline) died in my arms eight months after my technician retirement. He got sick on his final tour and never recovered. I’m thankful for the time I had with him afforded me by the early retirement I didn’t want. No regrets.
