Military Experiences

Jul 1979 - Aug 1992
4.2" Mortar Section Sergeant
I decided to rejoin the Military, after 9 years and selected a local National Guard Unit. Performed duties as a Mortar Section Sgt. and a "de-facto" mortar platoon leader. Trained all mortar personnel within the Squadron in all the operation of a 4.2" Mortar Section/Platoon. Attended Advance NCO Academy (ANCOC) and was selected as an Honor Graduate. Upon return to home station, was promoted to SFC (E-7) and assigned to the Squadron S2 as the "Intel. Sgt". Because of a TO&E change, I was assigned as Fire Support NCOIC and tasked with organizing and training the 3 FIST Teams, within the Squadron. Due to another TO&E change, I became the Headquarters Troop acting 1st Sergeant until I was forced to retire due to an unexpected medical condition.
Sep 1966 - Jan 1970
Chief Computer, 4.2" Mortar Platoon FDC
FDC Chief Computer, 4.2" Mortar Platoon. My oldest daughter "Debbie Kay" was born, while I was in FRG, at Nurnberg Army Hospital. She was one of the highlights of my tour in Germany. I was selected as Chief Computer for the FDC, in a composite 4.2" Mortar Platoon, Allied Command Europe (ACE) Mobile Force for deployments, training and competitions with other artillery units, throughout several European countries. Was promoted to SSG E-6 and was awarded as winner of Division MISPC competition. Got a Zodiac Seawolf as an award, which was stolen while I was at Grafenwoehr Training Center. I ETS'd from the Army in Feb., 1966 and stayed out for 9 years, went through a messy divorce and remarried to a great lady/wife and Mother to my 3 wonderful additional children.
Aug 1965 - Aug 1966
Computer 4.2" Mortar Platoon FDC
FDC computer and FO for a 4.2" Mortar Platoon. While on a combat operation, was unable to contact Platoon FDC, requesting supporting fires. Upon returning to Base Camp, discovered an abandoned Platoon position and was informed that the platoon was attached to the 1st Inf DIVARTY as a "Lighthorse" unit. Neither my Platoon Leader, Platoon Sergeant, or FDC Chief ever contacted us to inform us of this move. SFC Donald Root; you abandoned my RTO Martinez and myself and I'll never forgive/forget you. I never heard from any other platoon members, including SP5 Patterson, who I considered a friend and who still owes me $50.00.
Apr 1964 - Sep 1965
Chief Computer, 4.2" Mortar Platoon
Was converted from SP5 (E-5) to SGT (E-5). Collected and checked firing data from FDC computers and issued firing orders to the 4-guns of the 4.2" Mortar Platoon. Was selected to attend the "Battalion Mortar and Davy Crockett" course at Ft. Benning, GA. and was selected as an Honor Graduate. Our Mortar Platoon was selected, at the successful completion of Army ORT's, as the 1st Army Demonstration and Instruction Team for providing instruction to National Guard, Reserve and ROTC personnel.
