Bio

One of the first women in avionics... It was difficult at times, but that's the nature of being in the first group. I was 18 and came from a sheltered, cultured background and it was culture shock. My father tried to dissuade me ("College first!")from joining, but family violence made it necessary. I'm grateful for the roof over my head, food in my belly, and a G.I.Bill for when I got out.

Military Experiences

Jan 1974 - Jan 1978
Avionics Technician
Troubleshooting the computers, attack radar, the first Terrain Following Radar and various other avionics (including the first HUD unit--Heads-Up- Display) in the cockpit on the 1F-111D. At the time it was never OR (operation ready). The avionics were the first to have integrated signals coursing through the various units so that they could communicate with each other. Why did we continue to work on seemingly hopeless avionics? Because it was the first of a new idea and it needed to be figured out. They wanted everyone to stay in so we could eventually work on the B-1 Bomber. (Besides, I was permanently stationed in Clovis--in a "critical career field" and it was a terrible place for an 18 year old woman :) I had no interest. I got out and used my G.I. Bill and became a teacher...

Deployments

(3 years, 8 months)
Oct 1974 - May 1978
Clovis, NM
I was on mobility, but we never went anywhere because of the plane not being OR. I stood ready on the tarmac many a cold night, my duffle bag packed, waiting to be told we could go home or back to our squadron shop. Fun...not, lol Had all my mobility shots--for Bubonic plague too.
