Some of this I need to verify as I went to Vietnam on June 6, 1965, spent 19 months because my unit was short-handed. Returned to the states took leave went to Los Pogos in Pendelton. It was winter and they wanted me to go to the rifle range. I went to sickbay. They wanted to send me to an outdoor pool to swim with rifle and combat gear. You know where I went again. Next was guard duty, I took a bottle of vodka and orange juice and had no problem. Again they wanted me to go to the rifle range so I made a deal another leave and back to Vietnam where I was useful and did my job. I guess after 19 months in Nam, I neede a break from the bulls??? I stayed until April 1968. I realized I was not cut out for military life stateside. This was Tet of 68 and at the time, I was lucky enough to be in the right place to interfere with an attack on our unit. I was finishing out my time as Sargent of the guard for C-1-11. I was training a Sargent to replace me. A few days later they tried again but this time we knew where they were set up and we were ready for them with army twin 40"s. The Captain said I could stay for recognition or catch the chopper out to Danang and home. That was an easy choice. I arrived and refused to wait and have my hearing loss verified and collect from VA. I told them I had joined deaf by my choice. In less than 24 hours I was on a plane to Texas where my parents were living.
After ITR I went to Delta 2/10, operation Steel Pike. Returned to Lajune, almost immediately I was ent at my request to Okinawa. I arrived to join D/2/12 leaving for Vietnam I was at Parris Island Platoon 338 R 4-12 -9-? 65.
Our platoon drew KP for 21 days and we were in I believe a 14-week class before they shortened it. Staf Sargent Claussen. Cpl. Rudy were the two I remember most.
