Bio
Born in mid '50s at Philadelphia Navel Hospital. Father and live in uncle were both serving in the Korean war at the time. Both Navy vets that served aboard the attack carrier Randolph and the battleship Iowa respectively. I enlisted in the Navy a year before I graduated from high school to avoid being called up in the draft which was going on plus I really wanted to join. Had great 4 yrs. serving
Military Experiences
Apr 1974 - Mar 1975
Interior Communications Electrician (IC)
Shipboard communications and basic electrical work was my daily routine. I showed the crew 16mm movies in the evening when I wasn't ashore somewhere and was trained in fire fighting should the need arise. We supplied the 6th fleet with everything from food to vehicles while at sea. The ship had a helo hanger and flight deck which was always active. I was aboard this station during the Navy's 200th birthday and having arrived in '74 as a PO3, I left in '75 a PO2.
Jan 1973 - Oct 1973
Interior Communications Electrician (IC)
I was the only IC rated person on board this ship when I arrived as a fireman recruit fresh out of "a" school from San Diego. Had to learn a lot and fast from the one chief electrician on board. I was tasked with firing up and shutting down the gyroscope prior to and after the ship deployed anywhere. With a crew of only about 50 including officers I had addition duties as did others. Had a great time and spent almost 6 months living aboard with Admiral Mike Mullen, then a 26yr old Lt. during his first command. We had swim call half way between the states and Spain which was refreshing after my watch in the 135 degree engine room. Missed last liberty boat one night but the XO was onshore with us. Left to attend a "C" school in the Great Lakes and was reassigned to different ship afterwards.
Deployments
(1 year) 1974 - 1975
Mediterranean
Second deployment where I reach the rank of PO2 while at sea in '75. Was one of about 6 IC/Electricians and I was tasked with picking out and then transferring the movies the crew would see at night. This was done ship to ship during underway replenishments. Both of the 2 different ships I was stationed on during Med cruises were supply ships.
1973
Mediterranean
First deployment...was flown back stateside 5 months into 6 month cruise from somewhere in med to attend a "C" school I had pit in for while still in "A" school out of boot camp. Spent 12 hrs. in a cargo plane sitting on a metal fold out seat watching the cargo sway back and forth before arriving at Great Lakes base. Then assigned to 2nd of 3 ships
