Military Experiences
On induction into the U.S. Army I was stationed at Ft. Dix, NJ for basic, then 2 weeks leadership training, and then Advanced Infantry training. After that I was sent to Fr. Sill, OK for OCS to become an Artillery officer. At the end of the 22 week course I was told to repeat the last 8 weeks of it. I declined, volunteered for Vietnam, so was temporarily assigned to a holding battery to await orders. None came, so I volunteered to be a door gunner on a Chinook unit that was being formed on base. After practicing with them for about 6 mos, they gave me a flight physical which I flunked due to my eyesight so I returned to the holding battery. Upon return I found out, orders for Vietnam had shown up but were cancelled because they thought I was going with the Chinook unit. Never did.
