Electrician's Mate (EM)
I was responsible for varying numbers of men in the power shop just above engine room #3 next to the machine shop. We worked on everything electrical except aircraft related equipment and electronics. I was on the fire party when our ship had a major fire while in port at Subic Bay for repairs and nearly had to be abandoned; some pilots left their flight suits to dry on a catapult steam line in a store room. They caught fire and ignited magnesium airplane wheels. We almost had to abandon ship again while at sea with engine room fires that caused us to go dead in the water for many hours and come within inches of water coming into the hanger bay.
