Military Experiences
Mar 1991 - Feb 1992
NONE - Civilian
Dates are rough (long time ago). Went from backpacking around Europe to wandering around the middle east. Then the war started, along the Turkish/Iraq border I literally ran into a migration of Kurdish folks attempting to escape Iraq and within moments of my stumbling across them the US Army's 10SFG showed up. So I hung out and worked with them (the refugees and the army) for around a year. Finally when things transitioned to UN control, there really wasn't a place for me so I came home to the United States. Great experience, having been able to work alongside the men of the 10th I developed a completely new idea about the military and realized how incredibly important leadership is; good leadership can make an organization and bad leadership cannot save the worst organization.

Dates are fuzzy, but I ended up on the USS Vreeland for a year or so, I was fascinated being at sea. Really loved that part of it, enjoyed working with my hands (I was in First Division). Developed a warped sense of the military, which I now realize was due to the particular unit I was a member of; overall it was a poor experience and it was my fault - I was too immature to deal with the situation so I made some poor choices. But there was a lot to enjoy overall and I had a lot of fun and learned a great deal. Sparked my passion for being at sea. Still love it.

Guessing at dates here, this was a long time ago. Basic Training in Orlando, followed by ET school. I was dropped from the program the day of graduation from ET school (because of a really bad political decision I made all by my self. It would be years of stupid before I stopped doing this things.) Had a great time, Orlando was fun and I still occasionally use the electronics training I received. I loved the classes, I excelled academically and it developed a love of engineering that has directly led to my success today. Most importantly, it helped me learn the importance of corporate cultural politics and while I continued to make huge mistakes, eventually even I learned to play the game. Things certainly worked out for the best in the end. Being dropped was tough.
