For almost 40 years, I worked as a military journalist, newspaper editor and Army civilian public relations practitioner at locations around the globe. From drafting feature stories during the Vietnam era through coverage of the Lake Placid Olympics, I’ve documented airmen at work worldwide through his writing, editing and photographic skills – an Air Force career that spanned 23 years.

Public Affairs NCOIC
Office manager for 6-person staff serving the information needs of 7,000-plus military and civilian customers. Managed production of weekly 24-page tabloid commercial enterprise base newspaper with 5,000 circulation, assuring compliance with governing Air Force and DOD regulations, and host island sensitivities. Responsible for all office administrative functions during 8-month absence of administrative support. Developed database-tracking system to coordinate production of all information products within the division to include computer automated suspense and events logs. Public affairs resource manager for $40,000-plus in office assets.

Public Affairs NCOIC
Worked manpower management issues, office finance and supply matters to support 10-person staff. Supervised 5-person enlisted staff career training and progression. Responsible for office equipment and $60,000-plus supply account. Researched, wrote and edited public affairs materials for formal office plans and organizational annexes. As chief of the media relations branch, was responsible for collecting, analyzing and disseminating an average of 30 written an audiovisual information products monthly about DOD space launch operations on the West Coast to local, regional, and national media outlets. Designated as base spokesperson by the commander for West Coast space launch activities.

Received and acknowledged annually more than 1,400 written, telephone and in-person customer complaints, inquiries and suggestions regarding AAFES-Europe services and operations. Addressed 200-plus additional inquiries received annually through Letters to the Editor, European Stars & Stripes. Researched and addressed all headquarters command correspondence pertaining to customer relations. Assisted six exchange region and 24 area exchange managers throughout Europe in resolving customer demands regarding merchandise and services. Maintained and evaluated extensive statistical information regarding customer complaints, inquiries, and suggestions.
