Compartment cleaning, Gas pumps assigned to BOQ with Stewart’s for general assistance, but didn’t do stateroom maintenance or assist in the mess. Actually we didn’t do much of anything except sit in a booth. It was experimental we were told. We slept in their quarters and actually it wasn’t a bad experience and a First Class Steward was our boss and early liberty was always granted, but the easy life really got old fast. The officer in charge was a Warrant Machinist and he signed my request to become a fireman apprentice.’
