Military Experiences

1979 - 1982
Leading Radioman, this is where I learned to become a Radioman and a Sailor. Had MANY jobs, from writing Comm Plan to Antenna maintenance. Duty Radioman, Duty Operations Officer, Section Leader, On Scene Leader conducting Fire drills and Duty Section Training, Quarterdeck And Sounding & Security Watches. Naval Reserve Training Ship, training reserves when aboard. WOODEN SHIPS AND IRON MEN. Advanced to RM1. Ship transferred from Portsmouth Naval Shipyard to Little Creek Virginia in 1981. ran my first 10K race.
Aug 1977 - 1979
Advanced to RM2, Assigned to a section under civilian supervisors. Sent out weather information, hurricane warnings and maps to the Atlantic Fleet Ships and squadrons. Advanced to Section Supervisor as RM2 while all others were E-6's when Navy personnel took over operation of facility.
Oct 1973 - Mar 1977
Mess cooking for 5months, side cleaning for 2 months. Attended RM A School, worked in MSG CTR & TTY/AB Dick Shop. Three Med Cruises, crossed the Artic Circle (Blue Nose). Advanced to SA, SN, & RM3. Worked in NAS Oceana Comm Center Mar-Jun 77 until discharged on June 15th of 1977. Re enlisted within 90 days, repaired recruiters TTY for orders to FWC Norfolk, Va.

Boot Camp & 2 weeks advanced training. 30 days leave then flew to NY, then to CVA-62 In Athens Greece.

Departed aboard USS MAHAN DDG-42 for Med. Ocean Safari 85, started Monaco-US Race with firing of 5" Gun. Defended Freedom of Navigation Act against Libya, one of three ships on kadaffi's LINE OF DEATH. Awarded Navy Expeditionary Medal. Participated in CPO exam, made the Board and later advanced to Chief Petty Officer. Initiated in Goose Creek SC, Ed Gumphrey was defense attorney, relieved by CDR Crawshaw.

Upon returning from TTY Repair School, I worked in the TTY Shop with LOren Samples, Brooks Dean, & The Boss J D Watkins. we Overhauled our own TTY's while in the Portsmouth Shipyard after the Cruise. Left INDY in March of 1977 and worked in the Communications Center at Oceania Virginia until discharge in June 1977. Came back to McDonald PA

Worked in Message Processing Center, spotting, fleet broadcast, termination receive, and termination send. Advanced to Seaman.

Completed Med Cruise after catching CVA-62 in Athens Greece, underway 30 days on Alert for Arab/Israel war. Longest underway period of my 21 year career. I division then Messcooking for 5 months.
