Squad Leader
I was supposed to work on track vehicles and do recovery work, but I was mostly used as a wheeled mechanic, because I had done some of that in the civilian world and in Germany. The Company CO also found out I knew how to drive tractor trailers, so every once in a while I had to be taken to the depot to drive a truck to the Company to be off loaded. They did not have an assigned truck driver at that time, so I did not mind it once in a while. Kept me from other sometimes unwanted duty.
Dec 1981 - Aug 1983
I was sent to a very small base which was an artillery base. 3/79th was a Lance Missile Battalion, which was a short to medium range nuclear Missile. There were also Tube Artillery Units. one was 2/92nd and the other slips my mind. I knew NOTHING about Field Artillery, so I had no idea why I was sent there. The Lance Missile did fire from a track that was basically an M113 chassis, but they found out I had been doing some mechanic work in the "real world" and they needed someone to work on the deuce and a half's and 5 ton trucks. So, that's mostly what I did. my squad Sgt, Kenny wing tried to get me a secondary MOS of 63B,but they ARMY would not allow it.
