Do you retain rank going from National Guard to Active Duty?

I plan on taking my NGB22 and going to an AD recruiter right after my contract ends (Dec 2023). I was active duty for 3 years, I’m boarding sometime this year. If I’m promoted to E5 before my contract ends, will I be able to retain that rank in my same MOS once I go active? Are there any stipulations? If I don’t retain rank, do you find it personally valuable to still attend BLC, even if I have to do it twice? Thank you for your insight!

Short answer is - it depends. HRC makes a grade determination for prior service.
You will usually keep your rank if you completed the required NCOES. Under no circumstances would you attend BLC twice.

I’m assuming you are MOS qualified and with no break in service and staying Army it really shouldn’t be a problem. But it could depend on the recruiter and needs of Big Army! Going the other way would definitely not be a problem but going Active is a different story. I’ve seen it go both directions in the Corps and Air Force.
Oh I forgot to mention it can affect your TIG and TIS. There are different calculations used for reserve/guard and active.

If you make SGT before you go Active Duty...it is extremely rare that you would be allowed to retain that rank when transition happens. Even if you get reduced, yes it will still be beneficial for you to have BLC already completed.
