Fermilab is seeking a Deputy Chief Safety Officer (DSCO) to join the Office of the Chief Safety Officer team. The DSCO assists the Chief Safety Officer as the laboratory’s principal agent for planning, implementing, and overseeing the programs necessary to maintain safe and healthy workplace conditions.

The selected candidate will assist the Chief Safety Officer in anticipating and accommodating unique lab mission needs as they evolve, identify and advise on risk and mitigations, and recommend ES&H policy and protocol to the Laboratory Director.

You Will

Work with the Chief Safety Officer (CSO), Division/Section Heads, and subordinate managers to develop overall business strategies in formulating short and long-range goals for all areas of occupational safety, environmental protection, radiation protection, emergency management, fire protection and physical security.
Provide input on staffing, budget, information technology and infrastructure issues for Environment, Safety, Health (ESH) lab wide.
Assist in the management of the ESH Section.
With direction from the CSO, partner with other senior managers to set and implement ESH expectations lab wide.
Interact with and advise laboratory management on ESH matters to ensure that the facility policies and actions conform to related goals of the laboratory, federal/state laws and regulations, and Department of Energy Orders. May investigate and implement innovative management techniques and systems that may enhance the laboratory’s achievement of objectives.
Head specific projects or programs as assigned; represent the Section and/or laboratory on various matters as assigned by the CSO, e.g. committees, work groups, external committees, etc.
Participate in personnel actions for the CSO’s direct reports, including hiring, promotions, performance and Reward & Recognition awards, disciplinary actions and terminations of subordinate employees as may be appropriate. Participate in the development of the lab wide ESH Organizational Human Assets Plan and succession planning.
Assume responsibility for the overall management of ESH in the absence of the CSO.
Other duties as assigned.
Abide by and be responsible for performing all duties in accordance with all environmental, health, and safety regulations and practices pertinent to this position.
We Are Looking For

Bachelor’s Degree in Occupational Safety, Health, and Environment or related field
10+ years of work experience
5+ years of leadership/management experience
Working knowledge of any specialization listed below:
Construction safety (preferred)
Electrical safety
Emergency Management
Environmental Management Systems
Environmental Compliance
Ergonomics
Hazard recognition
Incident/injury prevention and investigation
Industrial Hygiene
Quality Assurance
Radiation Physics
Safety assessments and appraisals
Safety Training
Waste management and pollution prevention
Experience in DOE 413 project ESH management (desired)
Physical Requirements

Human Factors: Mental concentration, repetitive motion, sitting, standing, tight work schedule, visually demanding
Physical Factors: Oxygen Deficiency Hazard
