I bought a 2015 calendar and then saw a sign on the wall that said I could have it sent to a service member so that's what I did. It reminded me of Operation Dear Abby from a long time ago. We received Christmas cards from people we never met that would be addressed to "Service Member" or whatever. Some sent pictures of themselves. I always answered back and I stayed in touch for years after with a lot of pen pals. Those gestures did a lot of boost morale. Do you participate in things like that or does the military even have things like that anymore?

PO1 Rick Serviss, I do participate in something like that. It's called "Adopt a US Soldier." It's not just for Army, but for all services. I learned about it here on RallyPoint. Here's a link to the web site:

Adopt A US Soldier is a non-profit organization that seeks volunteers to help show the brave men and women fighting for our freedom that their sacrifices will not go unnoticed. It connects supportive civilians with deployed troops and offers a channel by which to communicate encouragement and express gratitude to those brave men and women serving in the United States Armed Forces.

I've been blessed with so much and been on the receiving end of deployment goodies so its only right, IMHO, to give back. I do whatever can when I can through Boy Scouts, family support groups and other avenues, not just during the holidays but all year round. The best part though is seeing my children start to take the initiative on giving. My wife and I teach them daily to be thankful and to give back. This week my kids wanted to go and purchase gifts for their school giving trees and food drives. They are starting to see and appreciate the gift of giving and we are so proud of them!!
The torch has been passed.
