Currently enlisted in the National Guard. I leave for basic in August. I was wondering if it was possible to switch from the national guard to Active Duty Army if i wanted to (before I go back to school because i'm aware that i'd have to pay back all of the money they would give me). Also if it is an option would I need to or would it be easier to do it before I finish AIT or after?

once you get to basic/ait your contract is pretty much set in stone and even if it were possible to switch there wouldn't be a single person willing to help you change it. Because the guard is state owned and not federal it will be next to impossible to switch to active and you will run into the same problem that no one wants to help. If you thought about it and really want to be active instead of guard I would go to a recruiter for the army and tell them your situation and see what they can do to get your contract changed before basic. If you are dead set on college being in the guard will make college go by faster and then you can OCS or if you do ROTC commission into the active army.

I was an NG recruiter for 3 years and it happens more then they will let on. Yes it is absolutely possible but I would talk to your NG recruiter and RSP leadership before you go behind their backs to the active Army. They will be more willing to help if you show some character and give them the heads up.

You need to go talk to an active duty recruiter ASAP so you can see what your options are as far as switching. So you’ll probably be a loss for the NG recruiters and will get a new contract with the active side as long as you’re fully qualified
