my son is a contractor and spent 6 months there a couple of years ago. Said it's not too bad, but he was inside the Embassy compound most of the time. Big thing is don't go anywhere alone because the locals will try to rob you. He said most of them are high on khat 99% of the time.

So sorry I don't follow this as closely, and I'm just seeing this message. If you were asking prior to a deployment, by now you probably know it's hot as hell and dirty as...well...a whole lotta dirt.

As in a world map situation it is close to the Danakil Desert (the lowest place in Africa) and very high in direct sun temps. They have a daily plane from Ethiopia that flies in Khat (Qat) google that. It's roughly the land mass of the state of MA. The post is adequate for troops living conditions and they were transitioning from GP tents to CHU's/CLU's depending what your service calls them. The tap water is/was non-potable. Driving off post is challenging but not impossible. It is about 15 minutes from the post to the USEMB. I was the Country Desk Officer for that country in 04-05 as an E9. Not sure on the current task-org or what your MOS is, however, as an E4 you may be limited on your travels there. It's extremely technically challenged as far as cell and internet. There is a burn pit dump close to the post and many beggars. Good luck on your tour and don't leave any gear near a French Legionnaire.
