Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Billings MT
208 AM MDT Sat May 20 2023

.DISCUSSION...
Through Sunday night...

Satellite imagery showed a powerful upper ridge over the western
CONUS into western Canada. A vigorous short wave was tracking
southeastward through western Saskatchewan.

The upper ridge will exert its influence today with warmer temps
across the CWA. Highs may be 10 to 15 degrees warmer than average
for this time of year, with many locations in the 80s. Look for
hazy sunshine to start the day as smoke still lingers over the
area. The aforementioned short wave tracking southeast out of
Saskatchewan will move into the Dakotas this evening dragging a
front across our area late in the day switching the winds to the
north and helping initiate some isolated to scattered convection.
CAPE is not too bad with 500-1000 J/kg progged, but bulk shear is
weak and helicity next to nothing so sustained updrafts will be
hard to come by. A few cells may briefly produce some small hail,
but otherwise will likely remain garden variety before dying off
this evening.

Unfortunately, the shift to northerly flow behind the front will
open the door to more Canadian wildfire smoke. The RAP model
continues to indicate a significant slug of smoke moving into our
region overnight and into Sunday...and we see no reason to
disbelieve it based on current satellite imagery.

So we expect a very hazy/smokey Sunday. We have shaved off a
couple of degrees from guidance due to the anticipation of thicker
smoke, but highs should still be in the upper 70s to mid 80s. The
ridge axis will be right over us Sunday as an upper low settles
into the Pacific NW. The pattern should result in some showers and
isolated thunder over our western mountains and foothills Sunday
afternoon, but little if anything for the eastern plains.

Notes...We anticipate the Air Quality Alert will be extended to
cover the remainder of the weekend as conditions should worsen
again later tonight into Sunday. The best time for outdoor
activities this weekend may be this morning through mid afternoon.
BT

Monday through Friday...

The main focus points over the long term will be ridging keeping
temperatures above to much above average and prolonged southwest
flow bringing multiple precipitation chances.

On Monday, a Pacific trough will bring upper level southwest flow
and at the same time, near surface winds will be southerly, which
may advect moisture from the Gulf into the region. This
combination will bring some instability with poor shear and high
PWAT Monday and Tuesday, which could lead to isolated showers and
thunderstorms. Tuesday night on, more moisture is expected to move
in and bring better precip chances (40-70%) for Wednesday through
Friday. There is still uncertainty between the models on the
possibility of severe weather. Currently, the shear profile may
become more favorable but instability mostly remains along the
border with the Dakotas.

Temps Monday are expected to be well above normal, with highs in
the 80s to low 90s, before a cold front moves through, reducing
highs to the 70s to low 80s. Archer

.AVIATION...

VFR conditions will generally rule today, however, look for
isolated to scattered showers/thunderstorms after 20Z as a front
shifts winds to the north. A few storms could produce brief MVFR
with very small hail. The northerly winds will bring another
round of heavier smoke to the area by tonight and may reduce
local surface and slantwise visibilities. BT/Archer

Thanks for the forecast Larry. Still severe drought in Central Florida but the gurus say we may start transitioning to rainy season next week.
