The cost of the 9-11 attacks prior to the United States firing a shot has been estimated to be $2 Trillion (see link below). I think we could have approached the two wars in Iraq and Afghanistan a lot smarter with a firm and detailed plan prior to invasion. With war though (as well as war games), even the best detailed plans falls apart quickly when the unexpected happens. So I am not sure what the right answer is BUT we had to do something to forestall another attack. As large as it is our Economy can not sustain the impact of multiple 9-11 style attacks, so our survival as a world power was directly threatened by the terrorists in Al Queda and they had to be confronted.
