LT D, Ma'am having a future POTUS with prior service experience plus combat zone experience would be great because I assume they would know what the troops go through. That might cause a POTUS to be more sensitive to our needs in terms of health care and other needs for SMs currently serving, and for our Veterans.

He dodged Vietnam by having daddy use his money to place him in the Air Guard for a couple of years... Hardly a treasured war hero..

SPC James Mcneil, in other words he's disparaging the fact that President Bush did serve.

Did you notice the fact that it even says he served, but was not active in a theater of war? I agree SSG (Join to see). Oh well.

A very interesting and thought provoking question. I do think that we will see a president from this Era eventually. Many have served during this long drawn out conflict and the numbers are far more than any other war most likely.

I'm not sure more have served or will serve in this series of conflicts than served in WWII - the roughly 16 million who served then is a pretty high bar to beat. Nonetheless, I agree that we're likely to have a President at some point who served in the military, although likely not in combat.

I would like to think it possible in this day and age, however I constantly ask myself and then others, who wishes to be President? Would anyone with a sane mind and sound body wish to have such a responsibility and for what? To be called the POTUS? In a time where we are seeking to be a "Profession of Arms" with honorable service, is politics something an honorable person would take on? Every politician whom I recall was honorable at taking office, who kept it during office, normally is not still in office.

Hard to say but after being at war for so long there is now a record low number of veteran's in congress, but who knows

CW5 Ivan Murdock , I was going to mention LTC (R) West, especially since I have followed him for a very long time due to his active duty speeches that gathered so much respect from me due to his square shouldered honesty. Agreed on the general officer front, just not sure that many HH06 would allow service to that magnitude post military service. Your service is much appreciated and just know if you decide to dip into the local, you have my support, much like our common friend.

Sorry, but LTC (R) West is whacko. His ideas would ruin all of us and get a lot of good men and women killed.

Everyone has an opinion or belief Don. There are some who didn't like Colonel David Hackworth either and the group soldiers for the truth.

Maybe retired LTC Allen West? Hey, I might consider it. The only problem is that I really don't like getting my hands dirty (in politics).

I believe so! We already have plenty of them serving in various elected positions around the country. It will just be a matter of time.

The idea of having a combat veteran back at the top running this country would be a great thing to see again and to experience.
Depending on their political party policies, I believe a combat veteran has the training and experience to have a strong foreign policy and maybe be some of the best domestic policies we have see in a long time.

I actually have ambitions to run for president. I understand what it entails, and I have a pretty solid handle on what I need as far as platforms and etc. This is a long time away, but still.

Very interesting but it also greatly depends on your beliefs, values and experience as well as your ideas for leading the country. If it aligns with what is best for the country then I would vote for you too.

As with most presidential candidates, I agree.
I would start talking about my thoughts on the issues, but regulations being what they are, it is not in my best interest. I actually was hesitant to say I have aspirations of presidency.

Sure.. we've gone from citizen soldier to community organizer... we've hit bottom and should start over.

I sure hope so. Unfortunately, some of the best leaders have left or have been otherwise dismissed. I think it would sure help our foreign policy to have a CINC with a field-perspective of employing us, knowing death may be a side-effect (and what that looks like to a widow, son/daughter or a mom & dad).

I think in time, a candidate who served in Irag and Afghanistan will run for president and probably be elected. I do not think it is necessarily a must, but I think a president with military service has a better understanding of the needs of the military and what sacrifices those who serve make. It is obvious to me that the clown in the White House now has no idea of what the military sacrifces and I wonder if he even cares. We have had others who served, who like Obama were clueless, Jimmy Carter comes to mind. My personal opinion, the best president we have had since WWII was Eisenhower. His legacy of the interstate highway system and his stand on civil rights have opened the door for both our economy and our society. People forget Ike was the president who forced integration in Little Rock and in our schools. It took time to spread, but on his watch, the nation became more aware and the term we are all created equal had meaning, maybe for the first time.

SSG William Patton - I was 18 when I went in and at LRAFB from late 1974 (December) and I believe our best peacetime President was President Reagan and agree with you about President Eisenhower. President Carter impressed very few and it seemed political correctness was being an onerous weight that was slung around necks post Vietnam.

Let's try not to make this a "bash the president" President. You are free to disparage him all you want but those of us still in service can't and we'd rather not trend toward something that could be a career killer.

Let's get one on the right path, right now! Who should be "our" 2020 candidate. Hope I am alive to see it. Male, female, Army, Navy, Marine, Air Force, Coast Guard, active, reserve, guard. As long as it is a veteran with proven performance under pressure that has common sense, courage, fortitude for the tough job and loves this great country, then I am on board!
