Job Search Tip: Keep Your Network Conversations Going

Conversations are currency because any one them may lead to a job. These conversations may not always appear to have a direct line to employment, but the more you talk with people, the greater opportunity you have to get an introduction to someone who can hire you. These conversations used to happen almost anywhere: attending networking events, a college reunion, a dinner party. Now, these conversations have moved more and more online, especially during the pandemic. The locations may have changed, but these conversations are still happening and are absolutely necessary for networking with the right people.

A huge mistake a lot of job seekers make is NOT being prepared to talk with others about their job search. When you aren’t prepared, then you can’t take advantage of bumping into the right person who can help you.

How to Be Prepared

To be prepared for these conversations, make sure to have a few things ready.

Know the job you are looking for:

• Being aware of the type of job you want is important. Research the titles of people who would work around you, and more importantly those who would hire you.

Develop your value statement and practice communicating your statement:

• Job seekers must understand how their skill sets and experience can help an organization. Practice telling your story in the mirror, so it comes across polished and professional when the time is right.

Ask for help:

• When you meet someone who works with people who can hire you or even work alongside you, ask them for some help. Ask about his or her company, if they could make an introduction to a potential hiring manager, or if they know anyone who would speak with you. So often, people associated with your line of work will know at least one person they can introduce you to.

Follow up:

• Lastly, make certain to follow up with this person. Don't get impatient or desperate if they do not get back with you right away. Realize that people can be busy and often offering to make an introduction can get lost on someone else’s priority list. Continue to reach out to that person, if they agreed to help you. Always stay positive in your communications with him or her, and continue to reach out until the introduction has been made.

Remember, you must be diligent in your job search efforts. Ask for help and always be positive. You may finally get that introduction you need!
