Synopsis: On this week’s episode of Borne the Battle, U.S. Army Major General Charles “Chuck” Swannack retired from the military in 2005 after over 33 years of service. He served in Haiti, hunted for dictator Manuel Noriega in Panama, helped put a stop to ethnic cleansing in Bosnia and commanded the 82nd Airborne during the initial push into Iraq. After retirement, Swannack became a senior mentor for military personnel being deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan. He later served as both executive director of Speedway Children’s Charities and president of the Patriot Military Families Foundation, and in 2019, was named vice president of armed forces affairs for Speedway Motorsports. In this role, Swannack helps to coordinate the Coca-Cola 600, an annual NASCAR race held at Charlotte Motor Speedway over Memorial Day weekend that honors Veterans, their families and fallen service members. Join us as Swannack talks about how he wanted to play basketball at West Point (but wound up playing golf instead), how he acquired a set of Manuel Noriega’s business cards during Operation Just Cause, the joy he takes in speaking with other Veterans and the importance of paying attention.
