I have only been in the US Army for about 6 years now. However, since I have been in the Army we have used the M16/M4 as our service rifle. As the most powerful military in the world, why are we using weapons from the Vietnam Era? The M16 entered service in 1964 which puts it over 50 years old, and the M4 Variant of the M16 entered service in 1994 which puts it over 20 years old. Why haven't we changed our service weapon to something more reliable? I think we should change to the SCAR or the FAMAS. What do you think?

Be careful how you talk about that weapon, it is almost human. If you can put rounds in the black at 500 yards with iron sights I'd say it is doing a decent job.

This is my rifle. There are many like it, but this one is mine.
My rifle is my best friend. It is my life. I must master it as I must master my life.
My rifle, without me, is useless. Without my rifle, I am useless. I must fire my rifle true.
must shoot straighter than my enemy who is trying to kill me. I must shoot him before he shoots me. I will...
My rifle and I know that what counts in war is not the rounds we fire, the noise of our burst, nor the smoke we make. We know that it is the hits that count. We will hit...
My rifle is human, even as I, because it is my life. Thus, I will learn it as a brother. I will learn its weaknesses, its strength, its parts, its accessories, its sights and its barrel.
I will keep my rifle clean and ready, even as I am clean and ready. We will become part of each other. We will...
Before God, I swear this creed. My rifle and I are the defenders of my country.
We are the masters of our enemy. We are the saviors of my life.
So be it, until victory is America's and there is no enemy, but peace!

I'm not sure what you mean by "more reliable." The AR~ Platform is extremely reliable. Additionally, it's modular, inexpensive, simple to maintain, light weight, and durable.
Yes, it's "old" but so is the 1911, and the M9. But new doesn't make something better.
However there have been several innovations, including going from the A1 to the A2 going to the M4, not to mention upgrades to sights and optics.

Except the M9 is absolutely terrible. Too small of a caliber for my taste, and rather fragile in some places like the spring. I'd much rather use a Glock for example. The rest of it I agree with though.

SGT (Join to see) I don't disagree, however... the M9 has a HUGE advantage over the 1911. Twice as many rounds. Twice as many rounds means twice as many hits, and twice as much suppression fire.
When looking at it from a historical standpoint, it made sense 'at the time.'
The Glock series (G17) has a major disadvantage being a Strike fired weapon. No external safety. Because of that, it's just out of the running. That's probably why the Sig ended up as the M11.

Yeah M11 isn't terrible, and I knew that about the safety issue. There was a rumor a few months ago that it was potentially going to be modified to potentially replace the M9, but I don't remember when or where exactly. Personally, I've just always hated firing the M9, but that's more of a subjective thing.
