Supposedly, there was an interview with Mel Gibson on a talk show (Leno I think) promoting We Were Soldiers. In the interview, Gibson talked about how the cast and production crew had a big game of paintball. General Moore took part in the game. During the first round, Gibson managed to score a hit on General Moore. Gibson let slip a little bit of celebration within the General's hearing, which was not received well. Every round after that, General Moore scored a hit on Gibson (often scoring headshots). Gibson learned to be a little more humble to say the least.

I'd have to pick Jimmy Stewart. He enlisted in Army Air Corps as a Private at the beginning of WWII. By the end of the war he had applied to and been accepted as a pilot and had been promoted to Colonel. After the war he stayed in the Air Force Reserve eventually being promoted to Brigadier General. President Reagan promoted him to Major General on the retired rolls in the 1980s. As such he is the highest ranking military member to come out of Hollywood.
