My father was Air Force my uncle was a Marine (WW2) and I was born at Fort Dix,, NJ (fly baby on an Army base). And I knew I wanted to serve. My initial idea was joining the Air Force. I visited their recruiter the Army recruiter and when I came out of the Army's office I saw the Marine in his Blues. I stepped into their office and felt this aura surround me. I has hooked I had to become a Marine. I had to have that pride in oneself that brotherhood. After my initial enlistment my wife and I decided we wanted to try civilian life so I was inactive reserve and thats when I was injured on the job. After my recovery I could not go back to the Marines couldn't pass their physical. Tried to go active Air Force but they didn't want a former Marine NCO and wouldn't enlist me. An Air National Guard recruiter I knew who was also a Marine told me about the Air Guard. I still wanted to serve so the Guard became my home.

I joined the Army in 1991. After several years of "not feeling the warm embrace of Uncle Sam", I was approached (read:poached) by an AF recruiter and, ET VOILA! Another ASVAB and MEPS-processing later, I was crossed into the Blue in 1995.

It was quite a transition, I must say. I had my first experience of "Hey, Hi! What's your name?" Me: "Sergeant McGirr." Him: "No, your first name?" Me: "Sergeant." :)

I get asked sometimes, "Which one is better?" My answer has not changed; both branches made me the leader that I am today. I am about to pin on Chief Master Sergeant, so my experience has been rewarding and fruitful. :)

It was also a very interesting transition for me going from the Corps to the blue. But I would agree all my experiences helped shape me as a leader. And congratulations on your up coming promotion to Chief CMSgt (Join to see). Thank you for sharing!

Thank you so much, Sir! It is all pretty exciting. I thought I was hanging it up a few years ago, but the Stripe-bearing gods found me. Lol. Seriously, I am truly humbled (and still a little giddy, to be honest). It is a tremendous honor.
