I will be in Stuttgart for 6 months soon, but I have never been out of the country. I don't know anything about the area or the German culture. What advice can you give me on what to do in my free time? Any "must see" places? Any tips at all?

The link has some info on it, I have not been to Stuttgart, I was at Sembach and Ramstein millions of years ago. Absolutely beautiful over there and great beer and wine. Get out and see stuff, castles are awesome. Have fun...Germany is great

SSG Campbell,
I am going for a short deployment. I have thought about reenlisting for it, but my wife is not willing to be overseas for that long. I am working on securing a follow on assignment to Korea after this trip but I will be going unaccompanied because my wife doesn't want to go there either. haha

It has been more than 15 years since I was there. I'm not sure what all has changed or stayed the same, but there are plenty of things to do down town. If you are into cars, go to the Porsche factory and go through the tour there. The Stuttgart zoo was also a good time. Volksfest is coming up soon, I think in September, and that was very fun. I took a trip to Nuremberg, and had fun. You can get a ticket for the train for minimal amount and travel pretty much where ever you wish.

Best thing about Stuttgart... It's not Ramstein! Nothing against Ramstein but after being stationed there for a number of years, Stuttgart beats it hands down when it comes to experiencing the German culture...mthat big PX on the other hand is ok I guess.

Once you get to your unit, they have tours, (unit) can go as a group. We went to Spain, I took a trip to Berlin and saw the Gate. And the wall.

If I remember, Stuttgart was in the Southern part of Germany. I was stationed in Heidelberg, and Mannheim...kind of close to Stuttgart. My Son is currently in Baumholder, so you're definitely going to a better part of Germany. There really is no bad place there, so much to see and do, just pick a town that connects with their excellent public transportation system and go visit it. They have excellent Folksmarches that are fun to do on the weekends, and of course, Munich has the Oktoberfest coming up soon. The river tours that go to the different castles is very interesting as well. So, in short, don't sit in your room, get and see their beautiful and historical countryside, and enjoy your tour.
