Spent 18 mos. there.. Loved it.. Take care in, around Subic Bay, San Miguel, Clark.. 55 gal. drums stored in these areas.. A/O.. claims have been paid to some but Not all Veterans.. U.S. Inspector General Reports, Environmental reports, World Health Reports etc. have been filed, however, nothing has happened.. Denial.. Away from these ex military bases, Beautiful, Tropical South Pacific Islands, Mostly clean Sandy Beaches.. In many areas, English is spoken.. Manila is a fine (more expensive) City, Away from the city, Money goes pretty far (at least it did ) Outlying areas can be a culture shock, but the beaches, Wow, Water so clear you see the sandy bottom... Overall kindness toward Americans.. however, during elections it can get pretty rough.. Keep eyes on the Weather.. it can get REEEAL nasty.. Should you enjoy beer.. San Miguel Beer is an excellent choice.. Not telling you what to do but before a commitment, Vacation there first.. Good luck..

I thought Philippines was mostly warm? Do they have something similar to Monsoon season in Korea? What's the safest cities?

SGT (Join to see) - Sir, they have a rainy season.. when, I don't remember.. In 1969, Manila was considered very safe.. because of the population, education, investors, conference centers, major hotels, tourism ETC.. I pretty much stayed around the military installations.. I was a Kid, I did not wonder too far..

Thanks for sharing. I've heard the same from those who have been there within the last decade.

I would think that the ongoing war against Drug traffickers and Islamic extremists, not to mention a huge increase in 'extra-judicial" killings would be enough reason to at least delay plans to retire in the Philippines for a few years.
