I have recently run into an issue with my civilian job in law enforcement regarding my Reserves obligations. I work overnight shifts at my civilian job, 2300-0700. I recently attended my AT with the Reserves and I requested the night that I would be returning from drill off, because my orders go until midnight(over lapping my shift that starts at 2300) and it is not uncommon to work with the army until 2200 the night AT ends and the training was 2 hours away. My supervisor approved this ahead of time, but the higher ups at my department ended up having an issue with it. I find it both unsafe and unreasonable that my civilian job expects me to 1) overlap my military orders with my shift. And 2) work a 16+ hour day with the army and then show up for my 8-12 hour shift working at my civilian job. Is there any regulation/law that protects me in this situation?

This is always a problem with shift workers. Police are not alone (although huge # of police are Guard/Reserve)
There have been some spot on comments. So I won’t go into that.
What I will touch on is this, briefly:
Guard/Reserve service is crucial to defense of this land.
As a Guard/Reserve person ( I actually can be PC) you will always be a pain in your civilian jobs ass. So, be the very best at your civilian job. Make your bosses love that you are there. Be as transparent about your Mil obligation as you are able. Always give them as much notice as you can. Remember, even though you’re doing a great service, lots of folks look at you as if you’re getting over somehow.
At the end of the day, your Mil life will likely have a cost with your civilian job. I have had bosses that were awesome, and that straight hated it. Comes with territory.
Pick your battles, you won’t win them all.
Good luck. And thanks for both of your services

You are working, so you can not work 24 hours straight. At least my old agency was that way. There are max hours allowed in a shit, 16 hours on first couple days and 18 hours on your Friday. I’m sure your agency has something along those lines. And since it’s documented by orders you were working, can’t surpass those hours. But if you had approval prior, and it was planned for drill, they can’t really pull it after the fact. But it is crazy times now. My agency I retired from was the worst about helping to accommodate for my drill or longer training times too. Good luck and watch your six!
