As SGM Billy Herrington said, for Active Army the process is automated, for the most part, as long as your promotable status is entered correctly after the board.

Accord to the Army Select-Training-Educate-Promote (STEP) procedures, aka Milper 16-089, once you obtain promotable status you fall into the pool of personnel eligible to attend NCOPDS, and you will be slotted by HRC (Para 4, Milper 16-089). HRC schedules all NCOPDS based on preset priority lists (Para 7, MILPER 16-089). Outside of HRC knowledge, you and your unit have no way of knowing when you will be slotted; you, your 1SG, and I believe your CSM will get an email at the same time, notifying and confirming your school slot.

Your training person has to input you into ATRRS (if you're regular Army I believe HRC does this). If there is a quota source available for your state or component then you'll receive a reservation. Then you'll get pay orders (guard/reserve) and travel orders to attend. Then you go.

MSG I'm regular Army, what is the waiting time to get a slot in ALC?, I see SGTs that have 2 years waiting, I'm a 88M and have 456 promotions points.

No clue. You're at the whim of HRC as SFC Redmond said below.
