I’m about to attend my first Military Ball and I was told I can wear a dress, now I’m hearing from my Squad Leader that we can’t. Me and my buddy are both going and decided to be each other’s dates so that I can wear a dress because my blues no longer fit and I can’t afford a new pair at the moment. What regulations can I use to support my case to wear a dress?

Your organization is having a Ball, you are a member of that organization. If your Service Uniform no longer fits you need to get a new one or see if you current can be adjusted. It is your responsibility to maintain your initial issue through your clothing allowance. You have no option here. If you have procrastinated and are out of time you need to come clean with your leadership. Bad news does not get better with time. Admit your wrong and volunteer for Company CQ, or Battalion Staff Duty. Speak to your command. Good luck and thank you for your service.

I’m only a reservist and I was just told a few days ago that they now want me in my blues, I can’t have it altered because it’s way to small for me and I don’t get a clothing allowance because I’m not active.

Understood, what is the policy regarding the maintenance of your uniforms. Speak with your COC, and explain the situation. They may have sympathy. PFC (Join to see)

PFC (Join to see) - Only a reservist? Pretty lame answer for not keeping your uniforms squared away. Sounds like it isn't that important to you in the first place

PO2 Art LaBerge - Petty Officer your correct in saying that it is kind of a lame answer and PFC Dunlavy I do understand your frustration about clothing allowance because I'm NG so I don't either but you don't need clothing allowance. I do military funeral honors and as soon as I got through my training (I always did anyway but now i put more into it) my uniform budget had to increase because I was wearing it more. And make no mistake it sucks because I'm an E-3 so my drill pay is crap but I still find the money to make sure it's clean and up to specs so that nothing is ever wrong with my uniform when I go on a mission.

My question for you is: Have you seen the Memo of Instruction or Letter of Instruction for the Ball that tells what people can/can't wear?

The ubotbis the final say on females wearing dresses at balls. That being said, if you can afford a formal dress you should be able to get your uniform tailored.

SGT (Join to see) no one said anything about why her uniform didnt fit anymore. The point was you are required to maintain your complete clothing issue at all times. This includes getting uniforms tailored if needed, that is why we as enlisted get extra money on the anniversary of our sign up date.

MSG (Join to see) - Master Sergeant if you look at Senior Airman Chris Forster's response he brought her fitness into account of why it did not fit. Agreed on getting uniforms tailored if needed I had to get mine tailored and I just recently had to update it with ribbons, etc. to meet my unit's specs so I could participate in funeral honors and so that if we do have a ball or anything else that requires me to go in dress uniform I can do so without embarrassing my unit.

SGT (Join to see) - I brought fitness into account because of her own statements in response to others questions and comments, one being "I can’t have it altered because it’s way to small for me".

SrA Chris Forster - Just because she said It's too small though does not mean she isn't fit. My uniform just barely fit me enough so i could go to my sister's Basic training. It was because i grew not because of what i was doing.
