My girlfriend commissions in two months and she just received her first orders last week. She will be a signal officer at 1BCT-1CD at Hood. She reports there in November after SBOLC and I am thinking of moving down early for my graduate program. What is everyone’s experience with Fort Hood and any advice that can be giving. Most of what we have heard has been good but some of it is coming from the enlisted side or family that was there a decade ago. We are looking at living off post so any recommended areas would be appreciated as well!

Second worst duty assignment, right after Fort Polk.
Unless you like gangs, drugs, violence and prostitution on a base surrounded by a third world ghetto, in which case it's fabulous.

I have been to many duty stations in my 20 years. Fort Hood was very typical of what the Army is. Not too good but not too bad. Not the best location and the city of Killeen is not very exciting. Plus the weather is HOT in the summer with a bunch of humidity.

I was stationed in Fort Hood for 18 months. 12 months was spent deployed in Iraq. I was cool with that.

Hmm Looks like it's a good thing I spent most of my time in Copperas Cove and Kempner. LOL never mind, I thought this really was a bad part of Killeen that I was fortunate enough to never see. LOL
