The AMPV (Armored Multi Purpose Vehicle) is the concept for the replacement to the venerable M113 and M577 which have been in service since the 1970's.

When I saw the pic from this thread I immediately thought of that movie.

Well, we could add a missile launcher to it. Not going to be able to do much damage with that pea-shooter.

What's ironic? I found the M2 to be the best damned urban combat vehicle we had (at least before EFPs showed up...). M113s were to lightly armed and armored, Strykers didn't have the turn radius, M1s main guns couldn't engage targets easily, especially on side streets or tall buildings.

spent majority of my career in 113's; A2's in DS and A3's in OIF1. Thought we were done with M113s for the Combat Engineers; and they were finally all going to be in BFV's?? What gives?

Pretty sure they transitioned over to Brads in 05-06, but then I've been in the light world since that transition started. I was in 2-8 CAV and we were planning on giving up our ODS Brads to them and getting fielded M2A3s in return.

My knowledge on this is limited to the attached article, but I have played with M113s and ODS BFVs for a few years. The only thing that sounds decent about it is simplifying the logistics chain by using a BFV chassis and the ability to fire 120mm mortars out the back - though I'll believe the latter when I see it. The rest of the stuff in this article makes me nervous that we're about to me sold a used car for the price of new one: WIN-T capability exists on pretty much anything, DUKE v3s can be mounted in a motorcycle sidecar, the ambulance version carries just as many patients as the current M113 and the crap about being fast enough to reduce ATGM targeting is pure BS. Throw reactive armor on it (which will be required if you're about to get in a non-NTC fight) and it'll go 25mph.

Seriously, I'd like to hear thoughts from anyone who has worked on this. I'm skeptical on first read of this article, but that might be more on the part of the author rather than the program manager.
