The wonderful sound of the Huey in Vietnam. It meant food, mail, reinforcements, insertion, extraction, R&R and ETS. After Vietnam I went to flight school and graduated in August 1973. Nothing but praise to those who flew the Huey in Vietnam.

MAJ David Vermillion you are so right about the sound, and the smell and the feel.
It is impossible to describe to one that never had the chance to experience an eagle flight of 12-15 slicks flaring for a landing. The air chopping sounds, the deep thrum feel deep in the gut and warm kerosene smell washing over you.
Christ, how in the hell can I miss something from 53 years ago like that? I have no idea, but would run at the chance to re-experience it.

This was the best part of the job. Only way to ride to work!
I usually got the seat on the floor, back to the pilot, looking rear.
I would do it again in a heartbeat.

Except at night, the tracers went by so quick they were hard to see. We were on the ground once handing off supplies and all of a sudden a grunt yelled at me that we were receiving fire. That's part of the patches on the helicopter pic

SGT (Join to see) impact marks in the abstract are interesting .. looking at them in the 1st person, past tense are a whole 'nudder thing!

SPC Jan Allbright, M.Sc., R.S. Trying to steal my seat are you? LOL. Being the Plt. RTO I got that spot also facing outward, boots on the skid to be the first to as they yelled at you to 'unass' that bird as soon as the skids touched or the bird went into a hover and the crew motioned 'off'.

SGT (Join to see) - I was at the veterans day Rio Rancho NM appearance of that bird for the movie, the weather was too bad to get a ride though. It was sad as I drove 3 hours to get there. Glad you got to get back on the slick, close your eyes and feel the ride.
