So I got tasked to do this training event and in said training event I will be running a “Battalion S3.” Where do I even begin to study on how to do that?

If I was you, I would ask for the SOP for the S3 shop. This way you will have other soldiers in S3 helping you; preparing the calendar year training schedule for the year and Any specific training/activity that will be conducted within the calendar year.
This way, you do not need to invent the wheel. During the process of preparing the schedule, you can make any changes you believe be beneficial.
You have a lot of work but utilize personnel that know their S3 shop!
Good luck.

Without troops. It’s more of a validation for brigade, if you catch my drift, Sir.

SSG (Join to see) - This is a good example of you receiving the mission, but you don't understand it. When that happens in training and real life, you refine your mission to comprehend it.
Do you know what I would do? I would go talk to the actual S-3 and ask what kind of products are expected from you during the training. Pick his head, try to refine your mission as the S-3.
This is my perception and assumption. Because you are an E-5 and do not have the requisite experiences and skills of an S-3, they will not rely on you too much. Keep us updated!
