I am going to resident EOA course in Florida. My DEROS in germany is up 20MAY2020, my school date is 20JUN to 04SEP2020, my report date to WBAMC at Fort Bliss is 10OCT2020. What are my options to do with my family, and what would be the easiest with a 5 year old heading to kindergarten and a crazy 2 year old. Tying not to have them PCS without me there to help them but also will suck to leave them for 3 months in an unknown place.

Just look at the TDY options listed in AR 600-8-11, where it states TDY in conjunction with PCS. When you receive your levy brief you have to choose one of those options and they will amend your orders to reflect your choice.

They give you options but not for your family. its all about the money. Its about who pays for your school. ANother option i forgot to add that they gave me was to go to my next duty station, but then they (Next duty station) would be on the hook to pay for you to go to school. Your going to be an EO, so im sure they need you to go to school. If you talk to them beforehand, they will most likely do that. That way you can get your family situated at your next duty station, and you can go to school. But its all about the money, if you go enroute the school is paid for as part of your PCS entitlement by big Army. If you report first to your Duty station they are responsible for the payment for you to go to school.

Follow Jason’s advice, if TDY is not in your orders take them back to S1 with a copy of the AR and get them rewritten. There’s also open door policies and JAG. Your not the first person who’s ever been TDY in route. Remember take care of family first. Best of luck. SFC (Join to see)

CW2 Christopher Esparza - I thought the same thing. I was repeatedly told. the Army does not care what you do with your family. that is up to you. They give options for getting you to school and your next duty station. That is it. What you do with your family is on you. Sad but true. I spoke with JAG, IG, everyone, ironically i was going to IG School. So i asked at school about this. Same story, they got me to school didnt they? Its painful to do from OCONUS.

That is why your Drill Sergeant will tell you in Basic, if the Army wants you to have a family, the Army will issue you one.

I can only answer this question with my own experience similar to this. I was stationed in Hawaii with a DEROS of 31 January. My IG School date was set for 10 Mar, and a report date to JBLM, WA of 10 May. BLUF, the Army does not care what you do with your family. The way i solved my issue, was that i took leave from 31 January- 10 Mar and went to Las Vegas where my mother lived. I had to enroll my 3 kids in school in Vegas as soon as i got there as it was 31 January. One in High school, one in Middle school, and one in elementary school. I has shipped my vehicle to the VPC in Los Angeles so that my wife would have my car and wouldnt have to rely on my mothers old car to get around. It arrived in Los Angeles while i was still on leave before IG school started. Once my report date for school came i flew out to Ft Belvoir to attend school. I flew back to Las Vegas, but that was a fight in itself, because the Army only wanted to pay me to go to my next destination which was JBLM. Anyway, i managed to make some phone calls to have me flown back to Las Vegas. From there i took my kids back out of school, and rented a U-Haul so that i could moves my family of 5 with 2 suitcases each up to Washington state. I reported early and re-enrolled my 3 kids back in school after finding a house and the PCS from hell was finally over. I say all of that to say this. The Army only cares about getting you to and from school and your next duty station, the rest is on you. I feel your pain, And wish you nothing but the best. Maybe you can figure out a better way than i did, but thats how it all worked out for me. PAINFUL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Let me add that the answer I was given as to why i could not do a TDY and return was because i was OCONUS. TDY and return to an OCONUS staion is somehow not authorized, although people go back and forth to NCOES schools all the time. The other option i was given was that i could let my wife stay in Hawaii, but she would be responsible for shipping my household goods and clearing housing with a Power of Attorney. Well neither of those options worked for us, because as my wife clearly stated to me, "she wasnt in the Army and will not have anything to do with clearing housing". haha, So we opted for the route I describes in the previous post. Man Good Luck to you!!!!!!!!!

1. It will suck in some way, shape or form. Embrace it!
2. Power of Attorney for the wife since she’ll have to carry a lot of the load.
3. Try to get the shortest route from Germany to Bliss, set the family, then travel to Florida.
Truth be told, you’ll be balls to the wall-no offense intented. But if you play your card right the family will be set.
