So many companies these days claim to 'love' the military, but I have found that most are only out to better their business, not veterans. What can companies do to show that they really care about the military community?

Hire veterans and treat them with dignity and respect. Don't just hired them because it will make your company look better.

And, if you plan to implement veteran/military friendly initiatives, consult your veterans!

They need to prove it. Too many companies, schools, and businesses only talk. Talk is cheap. If you want to make an imprint you need to step up and DO!

Through my work in the Veterans' community here in the Greater Pittsburgh/Western PA area; I've had the opportunity to meet with several companies in the area and talk about this very subject. Some companies like PNC Bank, ATI, and others have some great programs for Veterans. Some businesses in the area activity seek Veterans and while the Veteran may not have all the qualifications the position needs, the company gives them a chance and trains them so the Veteran gets the skills he/she needs to be an effective member of the company. Some companies have groups set up for their Veteran Employees. These groups provide support and a knowledge exchange of how things work within the company. I've worked with some companies to help re-write their job postings to better target Veterans by trying to help certain skills learned in the military and translate them to the corporate world.
