Work equally as hard on each part of each patrol where you are in a graded leadership role as for those when you are not. Your peers (and future Soldiers) will not be there for you if you only step up to work hard when you personally have something to gain.

When you're walking through the woods or the mountains, be sure to occasionally pick your head up and look around; the scenery is pretty great during mountains and Florida. Force yourself to smile when things get really shitty; it creates a biofeedback loop that releases neurotransmitters that make you feel happy. Personally, I was happier when I could stay busy, so I would make lists during downtime when we weren't allowed to sleep but didn't have anything else to do: things to eat, places to visit, things to see, things to do, etc. To be honest, when I finally got some food and sleep after it was all over, my notes looked like the ravings of a madman, but they did help at the time.
