War stories-your favorite

Working in the S-2 section, we had a box of thermite grenades to handle destruction of sensitive items in case the facility was over ran. We also had a SPC that had ordered some diet meals from the states that she was keeping in the section in close proximity to the grenades in the tent we were operating out of.<br>Yes, we had a vermin problem and one evening we saw that at least one mouse had gotten in the bag of diet stuffs to which we informed the SPC that this was why it was a bad idea. She immediately jumped to the rescue of her meals and started chasing the mouse around kicking at it.<br>It then registered with one of the tent occupants exactly what it was she was doing. The next remark was "SPC, please stop kicking the box of grenades."<br>

&nbsp;I was lucky to never get into action.&nbsp; But, my grandfather did in WW1.&nbsp; His stories inspired me to join.&nbsp; Some were horrific, but will tell you this one.&nbsp; During a lul in the fighting both sides had an arrangement to go into no mans land to tend to the dead.&nbsp; During one of these missions my grandfathers unit was out there pulling dog tags to bring back.&nbsp; At some point while slugging through the mud he kicked something.&nbsp; It was poking up through the mud so he bent over and pulled out a mud caked german potato masher grenade.&nbsp; On instinct he checked for the pin, it was gone.&nbsp; No idea how long it was there.&nbsp; He looked up and spotted an empty bomb crater and yelled "grenade."&nbsp; He tossed it into it and dropped to the mud face first.&nbsp; It went off the second it hit the ground.&nbsp; He survived the war with a permanent limp (not from that event), a very quiet man, that I loved, up to the age of 94.<br>
