I'm a little leery of this one. Walgreens was pushing this many years ago when I retired and I thought I would give it a shot. I had done retail management during my college days and then throw in the numerous degrees since then, combined with 20 years of leadership experience, I thought I had a shot. Not so...luckily I got picked up fairly quickly for a much more lucrative endeavor...but I kept my application in the system just in case. I started doing a little research and found out that two Army senior NCOs were hired...not in a management position...out of 180 applicants in the entire San Antonio area. I hope Walgreens has changed their tune, but this may be a case of beating there chest and yelling patriotism.

I cannot speak for Walgreens. I left the service in 1974 and went back to work with Osco Drug. While retail work is long hours and a lot of time on your feet. The exercise was good for me. The company was also good to me as I ended up with 7 stores before we were gobbled up by another group and my position did not continue. The staff in retail is nowhere near where it was when I was in management as they continue to get squeezed by Amazon and Wall Street sales and profit expectations

It's good to see that this includes an opportunity for education and a transition into leadership roles at Walgreens.

I just love it when big companies brag about hiring veterans. "Oh look how patriotic we are"...then pays them a low wage. They hire veterans because they know veterans will do the job done correctly and not complain about it to the hire-ups. Also, shift lead and assistant store manager are non sense positions, Oh you have leadership skills in the military!? great, you can be "in charge" of the crew from 8-2 but you can't really do anything (a position obtained by 18 year olds). Assistant store manager? yes, you can deal with the angry people I don't want to talk to. Great job Wallgreens, I salute your effort to belittle veterans in order for your business to run smoothly. I also love your benefits program, seems like a college student "shows you how Wallgreens does things" and that's your training in their "leadership".
