Veterans/Retirees: Do you feel that your local VA gives you the best care anywhere? Or just the opposite?

Where I'm from in Texas its just the opposite. I was diagnosed with blood clots in 2008. They almost killed me twice. I went to the clinic where I live and I was told I wasn't sick enough to be seen. When my sister took me to Houston, they did their testing and told me that it was nothing they could do. I had to move to San Francisco in order to get help. I shouldn't had to move just to be treated.

You were told that you were not sick enough to be SEEN???? That is OUTRAGEOUS; Sgt Sabrina Williams. And you were told that there was nothing they could DO; in Houston???? I find this to be astounding; let alone absolutely UNACCEPTABLE.
And you should NOT have had to move; to get the treatment that you so drastically NEEDED, and DESERVED.
Residing here in San Francisco, I will say that our VA is known to be one of the best in the country. I pray that you have received the best care ever- here. I pray that you are completely all healed up; Sabrina.

I totally agree with the health care statement. I'm clotted from the waist down in both legs. Ive had $152,000 at Stanford and that didn't go any good either. I clotted those before I was discharged the next day. The only reason I came back to Texas is to help with my grandkids (2). I just want to find out if there is anyone else out there experienced anything like I have and still is going through the same thing I am. The USMC doesn't want to own it. All I know when I was enlisted I was healthy. When I ETS'd I have a permanent medical condition. I still go back to San Francisco every 3 to 4 months for my appointments. I just don't trust the VA here in Texas.

It is my belief that my local VA gives us the best care anywhere.
However, I know that my point of view about it is because: (1) I am receiving my 100% service- connected VA pension check; monthly. (2) I feel fine; and I do not usually have a negative outlook on most things in life.
Also, when I go to the VA, I feel kind of like I am going home- to be with my 'family'. I try to help as many people there as I possibly can.
The motto of our VA is: "You served us. Now let us serve you."
....and they Do.

NO. They get worse day by day. I'm old and terminal and feel sorry for our younger generation of veterans. If this is the best the VA can deliver I recommend you begin , today, to demand loud and long its replacement and the prosecution of the people who allowed this to happen. As is oft repeated in the halls of the VA, 'deny, deny, until they die!

I am so sorry that you get treated/not treated the way that you are/were; SPC George Long. How I most certainly empathize, and sympathize with the way that you feel; although I have never been old and I have never been terminal. I have, however felt as hopeless as you do.
Talk to God; Specialist. Ask Him to hear your cry.
"My peace I give to you. Not as the world gives. Let not your heart(s) be troubled or afraid." -Jesus Christ
"I cast my cares on Jesus Christ for He cares for me. He will sustain me."
How I send you my most fervent, fervent prayers; Specialist.

SPC HIGGINS thank you for your concern. I am a Buddhist and know the human condition is one of suffering. But the VA need not add to the misery I believe man has the capacity to improve all our lives day by day. But to do that we must rid our selves of the problems. take a communal flea bath as it were. But in the end I worry about the youngsters. My wife lost a cousin in Iraq on the day the President announced all combat troops had left Iraq without any causalities. I don't care what your MOS or race or gender is. If an RPG hits you you are a combat solider. Her family was devastated and insulted that for all purposes the President played semantics' with her death. Basically ignoring the death of a female soldier.

You are more than welcome, George.
No, SPC George Long, that is the last thing the VA Hospital-a government facility-should be doing: adding to the misery.
I agree: man does indeed, have the capacity to improve day by day.
We need to do it though, as you pointed out.
Thank you for the photograph; George. I am exceedingly sorry about your wife's cousin. And thank you for validating her; here on Rally Point.
Being a female Soldier (Retiree) myself, if my death were ignored, I would feel absolutely, and totally disrespected. And my loved ones would never be able to get over the fact that I had let alone died, but died with the government ignoring my death.

My last VA interaction was in 2002, when I went in for mental health assistance. I was unprocessed and told I would be called in about 6 months when space became available. I left and found help through my university and never heard from the VA medical center. I am sure my name will show up eventually on the list of open dead files...

Man, that is unconscionable; MSgt Aaron Brite.
I am so very glad that you ultimately found help. I pray that you are okay now. If you are not, please let me know, and I will do everything in my power to help you.
Thanks for letting all of us know; that even YOU needed mental health assistance....at Your rank.

A situation not unusual but long standing with VA services for female mil/vets;

I'd have to say "yes", form the Tucson VA here in AZ and the Sierra Vista VA Community Based Outpatient Clinic. I know many are not having such service, and I wish all VAHCS operated the same... My only complaint is the drive to Tucson, but it's worth it.... For immediate care (colds, minor injuries, etc), I still have a civilian doc for, and do my f/u's with the VA.

I get care for multiple issues at the VA medical centers in Omaha, NE, and Fargo, SD. The care, concern, and subsequent treatments have been exceptional. I honestly could not ask for better. My appointments are very timely, prescriptions are promptly filled and mailed to my home, and follow-ups are filled with genuine concern.

Absolutely, for the most part, as a user and currently an ICU nurse. I believe I have received and provided quality care to my fellow veterans.

I have to say that I am a veteran and a VA employee. I have to say that as a patient for many years before working there, my VA has always provided excellent service. Working there now I see all of the effort that is put forth to make every veteran that walks through the door priority number one!

It's the only care I have now and thanks to the VA for keeping me physically "healthy". Mentally they're still working on it. I'm happy:-)
