Uniformed Navy Officer Turned Away From NY Hotel Bar For Violating Dress Code: How would You Deal With This Situation?

An unidentified female Navy Officer, staying at an upscale NYC hotel with family while visiting during Fleet Week festivities last week was taken aback when her group was stopped by bouncers and prevented from entering the hotel's bar one evening. At first, nobody could figure it out, everyone was dressed in professional attire; until the bouncer's indicated that the Officer's Class A Uniform did not fit it's criteria for female dress, and they weren't backing down. How about it? How would you address such an insulting situation?

I don't expect everyone to understand us military people and I'm rarely disapppointed. A bouncer is not a high paying position and thus when left to represent an organization (this hotel's bar) it shows the management made a serious judgement error to place their brand name and dress-code decision-making ability in the hands of their bouncer. Simple as that. I'm sure the negative publicity hurt them.
We have an obligation to fight this sort of treatment (ask for the manager) or we risk being brushed aside. My 2 cents.

Not sure what a Class A Uniform is (never heard of this in the Navy) or the equivalent Navy uniform but if they were in any uniform besides NWUs (Navy Working Uniform) they would have been authorized to drink. Either way shame on them for turning a Service Member away period for being in uniform.

Unless things have changed radically, no Sailor on liberty during Fleet Week would be in any working uniform, EVER. Dress Uniforms are ALWAYS required for liberty and should be acceptable and NO CPO or Officer would go on liberty in Khaki either during Fleet Week, as much as we would love to. I personally would sometimes go thru 2 or 3 sets of Whites in a day if we had many events.

CMDCM Gene Treants, one of the conversations that came up was, if the member was a Reservist. (NOT SAYING ANYTHING BAD ABOUT MY PEOPLE!) But it was more of "were they there for Fleet Week not assigned to a command or ship but traveled for the event itself." Because that could explain if they were not in the correct uniform. But in the end we also agreed that they should be in Dress Whites. I was just trying to understand what Navy uniform would be the equivalent of the Class A Uniform (I thought maybe it was the khakis).

Well I doubt the bouncer would know the difference and I don't believe which uniform the service member was wearing was the issue. Someone from the Army informed me that Class A is service dress so I'm assuming whites.

This just shows how much our service is regarded by the corporate world. As the fellow in the article on Military.com put it "just steps from ground zero this should be a no-brainer." Add to this the fact that it was Fleet Week, a week where all of New York is geared up to honor the contributions of Navy members, and this bouncer was more than a moron.

Few New Yorkers have served in the military relative to the city's population. It's typical of the entire Northeast. They're people who comment in the New York Times that the Red states are full of people who are educated, missing most of their teeth and closely related to each other. They complain constantly that the Red states take a larger share of tax revenues than they pay in. Most colleges have no ROTC program but there are more lately with the removal of DADT and gender issues. If you wnt to know where the impetus to make the military services a social welfare outfit come from it's the Blue states like New York. I left there 51 years ago for Florida and North Carolina and see no reason to visit since my Grandparents passed on.

Anyone in military dress should not be turned away from anywhere they wish to go.

I would take my hard earned money elsewhere. I would also send an email to the manager/ceo explaining the situation and if there was a larger bill I would maybe attach a receipt displaying lost funds and explain that you would be sharing this everyone that you knew and other veteran groups you are associated with.
