Should we take in more refugees or take care of our own citizens first?

I am waiting to get sniped on this one, but I think we should take care of ourselves. We have enough hunger and homelessness to last a long while to fix.

Correct me if I am wrong, but isn't Minneapolis still reeling from the crime sprees of the glut of Somalia refugees?

1stSgt (Join to see), you are wrong. If anything, the influx of Somalis has revitalized some blighted neighborhoods here in Minneapolis. They did bring their share of problems with them, but they have been a real positive addition to the community, in my observation.

1SG (Join to see) - Very well. That is not what I had heard from my family around the area, but your opinion is noted.

1stSgt (Join to see), there are two areas where Somalis have settled in numbers in the area. Northeast Minneapolis was an absolute dump twenty years ago, and that is the neighborhood I was referring to that has seen a renaissance. Cedar-Riverside near the University of Minnesota is the other one, and that area has fared less well.
The Somali community is generally hard-working and have caused little in the way of trouble. The big issues are the khat trade they brought with them and associated gang activity vying for that market and a fair amount of fund-raising activities that go to shady characters in the mother country. The FBI has a special field office to monitor that one, and they are pretty busy.
Crime statistics in the area are down by a lot.

I see no compelling reason to accept any more additional Syrian refugees than the normal process can process. Relaxing the rules here invites both disaster and a flood of freeloaders. It is very telling that Interpol has seen business in fake Syrian IDs booming. Not everyone is who they say they are.
