Should they be eligible for Combat decorations and Purple heart?

Considering the global realities we face and the fact they were engaged BECAUSE of their affiliation with the military, I say "Yes".

I have a feeling LTC (Join to see), that we will find the motivation behind the shooting was related to a terrorist entity....The Purple Heart should be awarded to these Heroes, they were at work doing their duty to our country!

100% YES! There are always extenuating circumstances for awards, however, these Marines were no longer required to be in a combat environment and have still given their lives to their country. Their families should be eligible for all benefits as well. If not we as uniformed services member must band together across all branches to ensure that the laws get changed to include this type of heinous event; and to not further neglect families and their entitlements.

It will depend on what the shooters motivation was.

If it was terrorist related, the answer is one thing. If he just snapped, which is possible (not saying likely), the answer changes.

Regardless of anything else, we lost five our own. The Medal means nothing. Absolutely nothing. I would give up every medal I have. Every accolade, every stripe, to get them back. Giving them a Purple Heart won't "fix" any of this. It isn't a step in the right direction. There is no amount of recognition that can take back the hurt of losing five of our own, in our own home.

True, but failure to appropriately recognize is egregious.

LTC (Join to see) Concur. But I don't know if there is a way we can appropriately recognize this.
