Officer sues US Marine Corps over recommendation for separation

Interesting story, indeed, TSgt Joshua Copeland. Tragic ending for the three who were killed. And it appears that MAJ Brezler's defense is now a bunch of technicalities, which I always find weak, but often work.

I do think MAJ Brezler was wrong to send classified information from his personal computer. In fact, there's no denying that, even if his buddy thought the documents were not classified. A classification review would answer that question. The article also says Brezler had other classified documents on his personal computer. That's a no-go, plain and simple, technicalities or no.

The problem here is that even if he succeeds and is re-instated (not separated), his career is toast. Pretty much a sad story all the way around.

Looks like a case of intent versus impact and ignorance here.

From what I can tell, he used his heart, not his head to quickly inform others of the threat other service members faced. I don't think anyone would have crushed him for that however, he would be held to task to fix the medium he uses to inform others of work related concerns.

The article indicates he had other classified information on his personal hard drive and that's where I'd assume he really has problems. While I am not privileged to all the evidence, I'd say it is rational to say the service has a strong case against him.

I hope this is not a case of three Marines losing their lives based on the principle that someone used the wrong medium to report a threat. If that is the case, then it would make sense to me that there are others that need to held to task. We have to take every step to protect our people from undue risk, at all times - especially if we know about a threat ahead of time!
